As part of the IEJ’s Senior Management Team, two Programme Directors are jointly responsible for the attainment of the organisation’s strategic objectives through the successful planning and execution of the organisation’s projects. One Programme Director has already been appointed. The second Programme Director (this vacancy) will oversee particular projects, initially the IEJ’s Challenging Economic Orthodoxies and Building a Feminist Economics Community of Practice projects, amongst others (see Objective 2 of IEJ’s 2023 – 2027 Strategy here: https://www.iej.org.za/strategy-2023-2027/). (They will be able to contribute research/policy/advocacy expertise to other IEJ projects should they wish.) They will also take a leadership role with regards to strategy processes, organisational and staff development, and developing monitoring, learning, and evaluation tools. The job is therefore a mix of building external research-policy-advocacy communities and internal organisational development. ABOUT YOU You should have significant leadership experience and familiarity with the subject matter of the IEJ’s work. You should have excellent ability to analyse complex organisational, strategic and political issues and design systems. You should value working towards a fairer and more just world. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES Strategy, development and learning Strategy Assist in development and on-going monitoring and updating of the organisational strategy. Organisational and staff development Collaborate on developing new organisational systems. Develop and oversee the execution of individual and collective professional development plans and training. Monitoring, learning and evaluation Collaborate with others in the Senior Management Team and external consultants in developing the organisation’s MLE systems. Ensure the utilisation and updating of MLE systems and processes. Engage and manage relationships with donors In collaboration with the IEJ Executive Director draft, or contribute to the drafting of, funding proposals, particularly, but not limited to, assigned project areas. Identifying new potential funding opportunities. Draft, or oversee the drafting of, funding reports for assigned projects. Project leadership Project management of assigned projects Ensure ongoing implementation of strategy across assigned projects through conception, planning and coordination. Management and motivation of project teams. Planning and on-going tracking of desired project outcomes. Oversee and review the preparation of project research assignments and advocacy strategies and implementation. Determine and manage project risks. Oversight of project budgets. Line manage programme staff Manage the programme team in their implementation of the strategy and programmatic work. Supervise senior researcher and/or project leads and oversee their management of other staff. Evaluate the performance of assigned programme staff. Partnership and stakeholder management Identifying and managing partnership and stakeholder expectations. Content contributions Content development Oversee for approval research and advocacy assignments in assigned projects. Contribute to, or lead on, specific research and advocacy outputs within projects and areas of expertise. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Required skills and experience include: Relevant post-graduate degree, other relevant senior qualification, PhD preferable. A minimum of 3-5 years of senior management experience. Knowledge of the IEJ’s programmatic work areas, existing publications in these fields is valuable. A track record of successfully facilitating progressive organisational change and development within a growing organisation. Experience in strategy and MLE design and execution. Financial and logistical acumen and capability. Project planning and staff management expertise. Interested in and passionate about the mission of the IEJ. Excellent computer literacy is essential especially in MS Outlook, MS Word and MS Excel. Strategic and analytical thinker; proactive and performance‐orientated. Organised, self‐reliant, good problem‐solving, results‐oriented multi‐tasker with superior management skills and judgment. Flexible and resilient. Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills. Presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with all team members and stakeholders. CONTRACT The contract will be a full-time three-year contract beginning as soon possible.
